難病（intractable disease）

disease は「病気、疲弊」などを意味する言葉ですが、intractable「難治性の」と合わせて intractable disease とすると「難病」という意味になります。

ちなみに intractable は「手に負えない」という意味合いもあり、「手に負えない問題」を intractable issue、「手に負えない紛争」を intractable conflicts と言うこともできます。

【例文】 遺伝子治療薬で難病が治ることが期待されている。

It is hoped that gene therapy drugs will cure intractable diseases.
